| Although witches and wizards in the French community have their own shopping district, Ollivander's wand-making skills are unmatched. All Beauxbatons students, however, are required to register their wand with France's division of the Ministry upon purchase. WAND CORESOllivander's preferences are Unicorn Hair, Dragon Heartstring, Phoenix Tail Feather. The majority of his wands have these cores. Wands can also be made with Serpent Scale, Pegasus Wing Feather, Manticore Hair, Basilisk Fang, and Vella Hair. Click the spoiler for a detailed explanation of each core.
- Spoiler:
Unicorn Hair: The unicorn is a creature of mystery and beauty. Gentle yet powerful, ancient yet pure, a strand of its hair is a wise choice for one who wishes to cast healing and protection spells. It has long been thought that unicorns protected the forest creatures, nurturing and overseeing plants, flowers, and trees. This core would make an excellent companion to woods that draw from the element of earth.
Dragon Heartstring: A creature of legend, the dragon symbolizes wisdom and longevity. The dragon is fierce and strong, and would make a ferocious enemy or marvelous friend. The heartstring of a dragon would be a wise choice for one who wishes to cast extraordinary hexes or defensive spells. Would also make an excellent companion to woods that feed off the element of fire.
Phoenix Tail Feather: The phoenix is a sacred creature born of earth and fire. Perhaps one of the most ancient of firebirds, the phoenix is also one of the most magical creatures, also thought to possess healing powers through its tears. The tail feather of a phoenix would be a wise choice for one who wishes to cast protection spells or lasting charms. It would make an excellent companion to woods that draw from the element of fire and water.
Serpent Scale: The serpent is a mystical creature often misrepresented in literature. Dangerous and stealthy, the serpent was summoned to guard and defend ancient temples or places of power. They have the power to heal, poison or provide expanded consciousness, which would make a wise choice for one who wishes to brew potions or cast defensive spells. A serpent scale would make an excellent companion to woods that draw off the element of earth and water.
Pegasus Wing Feather: The pegasus is a powerful creature of flight. Strong and agile, the pegasus is thought to create springs where ever its hoof touches the earth. A wing feather would be a wise choice for one who wishes to control the four winds or harness the power of lightning. It would make an excellent companion to woods that draw off the elements of air, lightning, and water.
Griffin Claw: A majestic creature of enormous strength, the griffin is consider to be king of beasts and birds; it possesses the bravery of a lion and the dexterity of an eagle. They are often known to guard vast treasures. A griffins claw is a wise choice for one who wishes to cast powerful defensive spells, charms or hexes. It would make an excellent companion to woods that draw off the elements of air and earth.
Manticore Hair: The manticore is an intellegent yet ferocious creature. With the brave heart of a lion and the cunning head of a human, the manticore is not a beast to be trifled with. A manticore hair would be a wise choice for one who wishes to cast dangerous hexes or miraculous charms. It would make an excellent companion to woods that draw of the element of earth, as the manticore dwells in the depths of dark forests.
Basilisk Fang: The basilisk is a deadly creature, known to be king of serpents. Poison dwells in its fangs and the mere gaze of a basilisk can bring death upon its victims. A basilisk fang would be a wise choice for one who has mastered the magical arts and can control its dark influence; that is, of course, if one wishes to cast good-willed charms and spells. For those who wish to cast hexes and dark magic, the basilisk fang is the core for you.
Veela Hair: Veela's are known for their beauty, hypnotizing singing voices, and their quick tempers. Veela hair would be a wise choice for one who needs a wand that can quickly switch from being adequate at Transfiguration to Charms. Though not exactly the best core for hexes or anything related to the dark arts. This core does have one of the best advantages in jinxes (being slightly more powerful.) But would have a slight disadvantage in an offensive duel.
WAND LENGTHWands greatly vary in length, from 6" to 15". Height/size may be a factor, as well as the power of the number (i.e. 13 is an ominous number, while 7 is said to be lucky). WAND WOODWands can theoretically be made from any wood. Details about the wands are available if you click the spoiler.
